Public realm improvements

Designing engaging and prosperous places that people will love

Public realm improvements aim to create better places to live, work and relax by improving the local physical environment. Public realm improvements include a broad range of permanent and temporary interventions. Field and Lawn are specialists in installing temporary public realm improvements and interventions. A temporary improvement can include providing new street furniture, installing street decorations, public art, flags, banners and bunting, or suspended immersive experiential installations or improving pedestrian wayfinding within a town centre shopping area. These short-term and temporary measures go hand in hand with capital public realm improvement projects. We use creative placemaking and city dressing to magnify the results of your investment.

What is the public realm and why is it important?

The public realm is the space between and within buildings that is publicly accessible and can include streets, squares, parks and open spaces. Investing in and revitalising the public realm and streetscape can be used to give towns, cities and shopping centres an advantage to attract footfall and increase local spend and improve dwell time all while providing a beautiful public space for people to enjoy and supporting economic growth.

Transforming your streetscape

Successful public realm improvements do more than make a street look better. They make it more welcoming, easier to navigate and more valuable to the people who use it. From flags, banners and bunting and seasonal lighting to wayfinding and immersive installations, there are many ways to improve the streetscape.

Outdoor flags, banners and bunting are one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to improve the appearance of a street. They add movement, colour and identity, and can be used to connect different parts of a place visually.

Street decorations can include overhead decorations, fabric installations and street decorations such as colour rain, statement crossings and immersive canopies like an umbrella sky installation. These larger, experiential displays make public spaces more memorable and sharable on social media.
Wayfinding and branding is often overlooked in public realm improvement, but it can have a major impact. Clear, well-designed signage and branded touchpoints help people move around and discover more of the area.

Temporary and semi-permanent public realm interventions

Many public realm projects focus on construction work such as pathways, pavements, landscaping and resurfacing. Temporary and semi-permanent public ream improvements can support these projects. For example, if you are resurfacing or pedestrianising a street, you can amplify the impact of your investment by installing cross street decoration such as semi-permeant flags.

Field and Lawn provided expert support for The Mayor of London and TfL to help revitalise the UK’s most famous shopping destinations, Oxford Street. A consultation showed there was widespread support for pedestrianising Oxford Street, which would help boost the West End economy by creating a safer and more pleasant overall experience when shopping. We installed suspended street decorations and wayfinding for the pilot project. The event led to a 45% increase in footfall compared to the week before, indicating a significant boost in visitor activity of the intervention.
