Up close with the sky garden in Cambridge

In spring we partnered with Cambridge BID to design, plan, and install the Cambridge Sky Garden, a large-scale suspended floral decorative street art installation transforming Green Street into an immersive summer destination. The goal was to create a visually striking, Instagrammable environment that boosts footfall while enhancing the character of one of Cambridge’s most loved retail streets. Green Street is a vibrant but compact high street, known for its independent retailers and eclectic mix of food, fashion, and gifts. The challenge was to deliver maximum visual impact within a confined overhead space while complementing the street’s historic charm without overwhelming.

Our approach combined creative design with practical engineering. We installed hundreds of artificial hanging flowers arranged in flowing clusters, on netting using a carefully curated colour palette to deliver a bold, summery aesthetic. Layered density created a real depth and visual intrigue from multiple angles. We managed the project from brief to installation and timed the removal with re-installing Christmas festive lighting in November. The incredible installation was created in partnership with Impact Plan Art Productions and installed by our in-house team.

Sustainable and responsible decorations

Can placemaking and city dressing be truly sustainable? With the right partners, products and materials, yes it can. ReActivate is a unique an innovative collection of highly sustainable placemaking solutions that uses recycled and sustainable materials, together with low carbon manufacturing technology to create highly sustainable installations. From flags made with recycled ocean plastic to decorations made with plastic bottles, we transform everyday objects into wonderful features that tell a strong story. We also have a range of durable textile based, PVC free products. By prioritising recycled and recyclable materials, low-carbon manufacturing processes, and alternatives to hard-to-recycle plastics such as PVC, our sustainable placemaking and city dressing solutions significantly reduce without compromising on quality or creativity.

The Re-active Air Coating on our flags even helps to improve the air quality on your local high-street! Results from the University of Sheffield show that 1m² of Re-active Air Coating can take out approximately 2g of NOx per day. This means a set of flags (c.50m²) can remove the pollution from a bus or about 20 cars every single day. As an added benefit, the coating also performs as an anti-organic film, not allowing any dirt or soot to build up, providing you with cleaner print for longer.

Illuminated street decorations and seasonal lighting

Illuminated decorations can add a different element to your streetscape. We can combine decorative products with energy-efficient LED lighting to create illuminated decorations. These installations range from motifs, that can be installed in trees to large-scale freestanding 3D ground features adding depth, scale, and atmosphere to complete city centre and rural lighting trails.

Illuminated arches, sculptures, and walk-through features act as focal points and create photo moments, while overhead lighting schemes help define the street as a cohesive destination. With lots of options to choose from, our creative team will help you find the best solution for your location.

Planning a big city-wide party or special occasion?

Coronations, royal weddings, VE Day celebrations, Pride and other events are the ideal opportunity to decorate your high street. Flags, banners and bunting are among the most versatile and effective ways to transform your public space quickly and cohesively.

Suspended above streets or mounted along buildings or even fixed to lighting columns, they inject colour and movement that instantly signals it’s time for a celebration. Event-led street activation and decoration will do more than just attract visitors, it builds momentum while brining communities together to celebrate. Local businesses will benefit from increased visibility and a true sense of place can be established in style.

Art on the street in Bath

Field and Lawn worked with the West of England Combined Authority’s Love Our High Streets programme and the wider High Streets Renewal project for Bath city centre, to decorate Milsom Quarter and Kingsmead Square. The beautiful spring and summer street decoration scheme coincided with improvements to the high street and a programme of animation and events to increase footfall and support local businesses. Created by local artist Zoë Power, the project features overhead flags, decorated planters, contemporary bunting, and window designs to bring the two locations together. The programme also supports the Great Bath Feast event, helping to create a real buzz and feel-good factor. We worked with stakeholders to translate the artistic designs into large-format flags, covering the details like infrastructure and installation which used existing fixtures and fittings. The results speak for themselves, and we had some great feedback!

“The Art on the Street installations will celebrate the city with a pop of colour and fun as part of the festival programme. After some challenging times for local traders, the street dressing will help attract more people to these areas and encourage future visits.”

How to start your street decoration project

For destination marketers, BIDs and local authorities, successful street decoration schemes begin with clear objectives. Whether you’re planning for a national celebration, seasonal activation or long-term high street revival, a structured approach ensures your investment delivers measurable impact. Start by mapping out your calendar of events and seasonal peaks and decide which format will work best for your space. For example, flags, banners, and bunting are scalable and can work all year round.

Floral street decorations are best enjoyed in spring and summer, with illuminated decorations extending into autumn and winter. We can assist with installation and location advice, including re-suable and sustainable solutions, together with when is the best time to install. You can save costs and maximise return on investment through joined-up seasonal planning. Rather than treating each campaign as a standalone install and removal, aligning your timelines can significantly reduce labour, access, and operational costs.
