The Brief

The brief was to transform a key city-centre route into an immersive, family-friendly experiential placemaking experience. Resulting in creating a “Secret Forest” that would guide visitors through SouthGate Bath’s shopping and dining area.

The client aimed to drive commercial outcomes by increasing footfall, enhancing the overall visitor experience, and encouraging visitors to spend a longer time and exploring everything SouthGate Bath has to offer.

  • The activation needed to be a social-first, shareable experience, to encourage visitors to capture and share organic content, particularly short-form video filmed beneath the installation.

  • Include an interactive element as a hidden layer to encourage discovery and repeat engagement (the hidden flowers and bees within the canopy).

  • Lead with sustainability, with the aim of weaving a clear environmental message into the experience while creating opportunities for visitors to learn more about the importance of protecting and preserving our natural woodlands along the trail.

  • Plan and deliver installation with minimal disruption to trading, completing works over night-time shifts.

  • Ensure a circular end-of-life plan for the installation materials, including donation for creative reuse post-campaign.

The Solution

Part of the Festival of Nature, the huge overhead canopy guides visitors through shops and restaurants. The shimmering, family friendly summer display is already gaining thousands of views on TikTok, with people sharing short videos from underneath the canopy. People are certainly sharing the love for the magical idea!

The installation also carries a strong environmental message and encourages families to follow the illustrative trail and learn more about preserving and protecting our woodland wildlife, from birds and insects to mammals and native plants! See the previous placemaking display in Bath here.

Oxford Street in London is the nation’s most famous high street, and This is Oxford Street was a pioneering event to showcase what can be achieved when brand, destination marketing, placemaking and experience is unified.

This is Oxford Street, Pedestrianised for a special event

The Brief

The brief was to transform Oxford Street with art installations including  an urban forest, sports pitches, chill out zones, live performances and food and drink from around the world. while providing unique, on brand city dressing to mark the occasion and put Oxford Street on the map during the pilot project.  The scheme needed to be impactful and work perfectly as a backdrop for social media activity.

The Solution

The creative team from Field and Lawn played an expert part in the special day, installing rows of specially designed, cross street flags that stretched the length of Oxford Street, helping to draw the crowds through the space.

This installation was even more remarkable as bespoke flags were installed in just one night by our dedicated in-house installation teams, featuring a “This is Oxford Street” design and demonstrating our ability to reimagine high streets.

Rainbow Flags in Mayfair

Summer

In 2024, Art of London and Art in Mayfair, in partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts, revealed a vibrant aerial display across the West End featuring over 60 flags. The Solution

Titled ‘Rainbow Flags’, the innovative artwork on Piccadilly supported by Art of London features a stunning array of vibrant colours, where the edges blur and fold into each other to symbolise the diversity of LGBTQ+ identities. Faramawy masterfully uses colour and soft contours to reinvent the traditional Pride flag and make it more inclusive, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Adham Faramawy, a distinguished graduate of the prestigious RA Schools, created the artwork from which these flags have been based, whilst a student at the RA Schools.

Field and Lawn were delighted to assist with the installation of the high street flags, with in-house teams working through the night to ensure completion before a parade.

“It is an honour to unveil ‘Rainbow Flags’ in the West End. I look forward to seeing the art soar above the streets this summer as a celebration of the reopening of the RA Schools and as a backdrop to Pride in London.”

The Solution

Field and Lawn were pleased to support the project by installing bespoke, large scale placemaking flags and banners designed by the prominent artist, Zoe Power. The project was funded by the West of England Combined Authority’s Love Our High Streets programme. It formed part of a wider High Streets Renewal project for Bath city centre, which in part aims to support the Milsom Quarter and Kingsmead Square with improvements to the high street and a programme of animation and events to increase footfall and support local businesses.

This project fed into other project realm improvements that were delivered throughout the summer, including upgrades to street furniture at New Street and New Bond Street, and artwork among street corridors in the city.

Galleries on Cork Street

Summer

The Galleries on Cork Street joined forces for a group exhibition entitled ‘Fear Gives Wings to Courage’ to celebrate 100 years as a landmark destination for art in London and recognise the galleries as a pioneering force within the art world.

artistic placemaking flags

The Brief

Field and Lawn were asked to project manage the installation of bold, artistic flags, creating a visually powerful activation that transformed the Cork Street scene while honouring its rich legacy of modern and contemporary art.

The Solution

The ‘Fear Gives Wings to Courage’ installation was staged across all 15 galleries on Cork Street.

  • Each flag represented each individual gallery’s response to a central theme conceived by Tarini Malik, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
  • The exhibition theme recalled Cork Street’s pioneering role in transforming London into a hub for international art practices in the 20th century, while also making it one of the key platforms in Europe for the expansion of Surrealist and Dadaist movements.
“It is a huge honour for The Pollen Estate, as the 400 year old custodian of this part of Mayfair, to celebrate a century of artistic endeavour with Cork Street Galleries. The 15 galleries have come together to collaborate in a first-of-its-kind exhibition that honours the legacy of those who paved the way whilst championing the artists who continue to pioneer. This longevity is unrivalled in London and Cork Street Galleries, an initiative of the Pollen Estate, remains a world class destination for artists, galleries and art audiences.”

The shimmering, family friendly summer display is already gaining thousands of views on TikTok, with people sharing short videos from underneath the canopy. People are certainly sharing the love for the magical idea!

The installation also carries a strong environmental message and encourages re-cycling through a larger-than-life recycling container fish! Plastic waste was planned to be collected and in collaboration with Bristol Avon River Trust, recycled or repurposed. In addition, the ribbons will have a new lease of life for reuse.
