How Placemaking and City dressing provides a perfect backdrop for special occasions

After the Coronation, we are reflecting on a busy period of installations and activations to celebrate the historic moment.  Field and Lawn have spent hundreds of hours decorating and dressing the capital and other cities across the UK with bespoke flags, banners, bunting and interactive large scale illuminated features. Public spaces have been transformed for visitors, tourists, residents and business to enjoy, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The team are used to providing brand activation support for key national events and special occasions, having been involved with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year.  Our in-house installation teams often work through the night to minimise disruption to local business in challenging environments.  It has been a great honour to provide placemaking services for the Coronation, it is clear there is a true sense of excitement ahead of the momentous day.

Lets take a look at what we have been up to!…

Placemaking projects for the Coronation

A bespoke, 16ft illuminated crown has been installed at Marble Arch in London.  The crown is a real focal point, day and night. It provides a wonderful photo opportunity and is already gaining lots of traction on social media!  This display also provides a great visual spectacle.

We have also provided a wide range of Coronation displays and features across the capital:

  • Coronation flags on Regent St. Oxford St. Jermyn St. The Strand, Marylebone High St. Bond St. Sloan St. and various other streets across the West End.
  • Lamp post banners on Kings Road, Brompton Road
  • Bunting Covent Garden

Outside of London, we have provided placemaking and city dressing services in Edinburgh and Carlisle, installing more flags and bunting at key city centre locations.

Placemaking and city dressing

Placemaking is a collaborative transformation of open spaces to create vibrant, engaging, and sustainable places that people want to visit, live, work and play in.

City dressing forms part of the placemaking mix.  It can use art installations, landscaping, projections, urban greening, large scale signage and other design elements to enhance the aesthetic appeal of spaces.

While on our travels, it has been great to see so many community displays popping up in parks, public spaces and communities. Demonstrating creative flair, passion and patriotism for the Coronation.  It shows that when we pull together, something very special can be achieved.
