Behind the scenes at the installation
Edinburgh’s festive season is underway as the city’s iconic Christmas tree on The Mound has now been fully installed and beautifully decorated by the festive lighting team at Field and Lawn. The towering spruce tree, a long-standing symbol of friendship between Scotland and Norway stands ready to delight crowds this Christmas.

Planning and instalation
The installation involved installing over 1,000 metres of energy efficient LED lights onto the tree on The Mound, that’s equivalent too around 10 football pitches or roughly the height of 2.5 Empire State Buildings! Planning for the installation starts in February, and involves considering the installation methodology, lighting styles and sourcing the iconic tree. The tree installation is completed in a tight four-hour window, starting at 6am, with the decoration taking a team of four two days to complete.

This year the tree is decorated with iced white and warm white lighting. While the tree is no longer physically transported from Norway, it continues to represent the historic gift from Vestland (formerly Hordaland) as a gesture of gratitude for Scotland’s support during the Second World War. Its arrival and installation remain one of the most anticipated milestones in the city’s Christmas calendar.
Installing the tree on such a prominent and busy site requires careful planning, coordination, and technical expertise. From craning the tree into position to securing connections and preparing the lighting sequences, crews worked efficiently to ensure everything is ready for the season ahead.
