Our project management team work closely with client stakeholders on site to review the schedule of works, confirm requirements and communicate any changes before finalising the installation plan. Before work begins, our installation teams meet with their dedicated Project Managers internally to review the plan and ensure they are fully briefed. We assign every project a single point of contact, providing a clear instant communication channel for any questions or updates.

We produce relevant RAMs and build schedules before our teams commence installation. Our teams often work through the night to reduce disruption to local businesses and residents. The build schedule clearly outlines what will be installed, where we will install it and when each stage will take place. A Team Leader will manage and lead installation, keep you up to date with nightly reports and coordinates the upcoming work each night to keep the project on track.

How long does it take to install commercial festive lighting?

This is a complicated question, and it can vary significantly based on the area you are looking to decorate and the complexity of the scheme. As a guide, our teams can install a simple crossing within an hour, and two pole mounts can also be installed within an hour.

In our experience, installation speed needs to be balanced with quality and attention to detail. For that reason, we create a bespoke installation programme for every project. This allows us time to achieve the very best possible finish. Our teams carefully position decorations at consistent height, to maximise visual and design impact. While also ensuring all cabling is tidy, hidden and safe and every aspect is working as it should.

Infrastructure can also influence installation timeframe, especially power provision and fixings. If power supply, fixing points or permissions are not already in place, additional work may extend the programme by several weeks. Therefore, it’s advisable to start planning your installation as early as possible.

Permissions and power installation

If you want to install a Christmas lighting scheme but are unsure about power requirements, permission or installation infrastructure, we can guide you through the process. Generally, you will need permission from the relevant asset owner before installing the power infrastructure, which may require an application to the appropriate authority to secure permission. For example: Lamp motifs on public highways typically require approval from the Highways Authority, and installations on private land require permission from the landowner.

Once the approvals are in place, you need to check the relevant power provision is in place, for commercial grade Christmas lighting generally use a 16amp commando unit. If power infrastructure is not already in place then the commando units will need to be installed. Field and Lawn can complete the power installation, but permission needs to be secured prior to commencement.

For example, we partnered with Crewe BID to facilitate this process. This included advice on obtaining permission from both Highways (for a major road within the town) and a private land agent for lighting within an outdoor retail park. We also commissioned the electrical installation ahead of installing the Christmas lights. The end result was an expanded scheme, covering a greater area, providing an additional 34 lamp post motifs.

While purchasing new decorations each year can require significant investment, Field and Lawn offers a range of ready to hire ex-display lighting products. Our teams test and commission every product so they are ready for installation. Hiring and installing ex-display lighting is a cost effective way to refresh a scheme while reducing lead times and installation costs as the product is ready at short notice.

Beyond installation, we can provide a full-service delivery, including: infrastructure testing, design development, operational planning, production and procurement, commissioning, testing, switch on and removal. Once the lights have been removed, our work doesn’t stop! When displays are received at our warehouses, we review the itemised delivery schedule, log the display and features into the system. We complete any required maintenance, repairs and refurbishment work to ensure your lights are ready to be installed the following year, without delays.
